This very short passage shows Jacob getting about the business of reclaiming his rightful inheritance as a descendant of Abraham.  He even went to the town of Shechem, where Abraham had dwelt as well.  He bought a piece of land and set up his dwelling there.  Not extremely eventful, except for him getting back on track after a period of escape after committing a sin against his family.

The great thing about this story is the fact that Jacob set up an altar.  He called it El Elohe Israel, which translates “God, the God of Israel.”  Jacob had some amazing experiences with God, including Bethel and Peniel.  Jacob set up markers and reminders of his experiences with God.  We need to set up reminders, whether literal or mental, that help us celebrate and remember the blessings of God.  When we recall the goodness of God in the past, we can believe for the goodness of God in the present and future.  “When I think of His goodness, and what He’s done for me….”  Believe that the great blessings of God are not just history, but prophecy!
