Jacob (Israel) dies at the ripe old age of 147.  His family has been reunited.  The miracle of provision has come through his long-lost son, Joseph, whose dreams have been fulfilled.  Abraham has blessed all his sons, and his two grandsons from Joseph, his favored son.  When he was dying, he instructed his sons to take him back to the field of Machpelah in Canaan, where his fathers were buried.  Joseph made that pledge.

Once Israel died, Joseph had him embalmed, and a pageant of mourning began, which ended up with a trek back to Canaan, where Israel was properly buried.  What can we learn from this story?  A few things come to mind.

First, don’t ever give up on your dreams.  I have had dreams whose fulfillment was delayed 20 years, but eventually came to pass, because God is faithful.

Second, don’t hate the journey.  Dreams delayed can be disappointing and discouraging, but the journey prepares you for the destination.

Third, honor those who has helped you on the journey.  Jacob was honored by his sons and his wishes carried out.  A blessing comes when you are selfless along the journey toward the fulfillment of your dreams!
