Moses grew up in the house of the king, but was always aware of his Hebrew birth.  When he walked among the other Hebrews, he saw the plight of his brothers and then understood the inhumanity of their situation.  While observing an Egyptian taskmaster beating a Hebrew, he came to his defense, and killed the Egyptian, and then buried him in the sand.  The next day he saw two Hebrews fighting and came to break up the fight, and they asked if he would kill them, too.  At this point he knew that the word of his murderous activities was public knowledge.  He ran, and began to live as a fugitive.  He ended up in the land of Midian, and took up residence with the priest of Midian, Reuel.  He gave Moses his daughter, Zipporah, and they were married and had a son.  Moses was, perhaps, resigned to his new existence.

While Moses made his new life in Midian, the Hebrews cried out to God in Egypt, and the Lord heard them.  While Moses tended the flock of Reuel (aka Jethro), the Lord appeared to him at Horeb in the midst of a burning bush.  Moses turned aside to see what was going on and encountered God Himself.  God told Moses to take off his sandals, “for the place where you stand is holy ground.”  Moses hid his face from the presence of God, and God began to unfold the plight of the Hebrews and how He wanted Moses to go and minister to them.  He let Moses know that he would deliver them and take them back to the promised land of Canaan.

Moses tried to talk God out of this calling, but God would not relent.  He gave him His name, Yahweh (I Am) and told him what to say to the Israelites in order to convince them that God had sent them a deliverer.  He even told of the wonders (plagues) He would perform and how the Israelites would plunder the Egyptians, all prophetic utterances that would be fulfilled in the life of Israel in just days to come.

Moses has been through an amazing journey that started with his adoption, a life of royalty, a murder, a sojourn in the Midianite desert, a burning bush, and a calling to save a nation.  All of this led up to his accepting the call to be a leader.  God is calling all of us to a role, a job, a possible lifetime ministry.  To what is God calling you?  If you keep your ears open for the voice of God, and your eyes open for a burning bush, God is wanting to speak to you about what He has in store for you.  Be open and attentive to His voice!
