Moses is standing face to face with the presence of God, hearing the voice of God.  He has been given the authority of the name of God Himself, Jehovah (I am That I am).  Yet he asks God more questions and tries to beg out of the responsibility to which God has called him.  So God simply asks the question, “What is that in your hand?”  A simple question to which Moses answers, “A rod.”  Then He instructs Moses to throw it down on the ground, and it turned into a serpent.  Moses ran from it, and then God told him to pick it up again by the tail, which Moses does.  The serpent turned back into a rod.  He proceeds to tell Moses to put his hand into his robe near his chest, and it becomes leprous.  He instructs him to put it in again, and when he takes it out, it is clean again.  He also tells him that if he takes water from the river and pours it out on the land, it will turn into blood.  All these signs would help convince Pharaoh to let the Israelites go.

Moses protests further, pointing out that he is not eloquent.  Some think that Moses had a speech impediment, which is possible.  However, it is also possible that–having been reared in Pharaoh’s house–that he was simply not fluent in Hebrew, but rather the Egyptian language.  God became angry with Moses, and told Him in no uncertain terms that He could put the appropriate words in Moses’ mouth if need be.  Nevertheless, He would provide Moses’ brother, Aaron the Levite, to be Moses’ spokesperson.

Finally, Moses accepted his calling, and set the plan in motion.  He informed his father-in-law, Jethro, and was sent away in peace.  The Lord affirmed to him that all the people who sought His life were dead, and it was safe to return.  He also told him that he should show Pharaoh all the signs, but that Pharaoh would harden his heart and refuse to let the Israelites go.  Moses should then warn him that wonders would happen to change his mind, and that even his firstborn would be required.  This prophetic utterance would come to pass in full.

God then told Aaron to go toward the wilderness to meet Moses, and they discussed the plan, and then met with all the elders of the children of Israel.  When Moses showed all of them the signs that God had given to him, they believed and knew that God was going to deliver them.  They “bowed their heads and worshiped.”

To what great thing is God calling you?  What wonderful purpose has God planned for your life?  We are human.  We have doubts and fears.  We do not believe that the voice of God is truly His at times.  We question God and discount His voice and refuse to answer the call.  What stops us?  Fear? Lack of closeness to His Spirit? A dearth of self-confidence or confidence in God?  Today is a great day to believe in the burning bush and answer the call of God!  Why is that, you ask?  Because the coming of the Lord is at hand.  Just as the deliverance of the people of Israel was close at hand, so is the coming of the Lord to rapture His church!  Therefore, we–like Moses–must answer the call in order to liberate sinful people from the power of the enemy and help them find Christ before the end of this world.  So, stop making excuses and step up to the call of God!  We can try to explain away everything God says we can and should do, or we can answer the call and change our corner of the world!

Whatever God is calling you to do, He has already equipped you to perform.  Whether it is a rod, or a computer, or a writing utensil, or a musical instrument, God has put something in your hand that you can use to serve Him and fulfill His purpose for your life.  Stop making excuses and use that thing for His glory!
