As Israel leaves the basin of the Red Sea, and sees Egypt’s finest warriors overwhelmed by the sea waters as it returns to its normal level, a song or poem is crafted to commemorate the Lord’s Victory. Several elements can be identified.
Oblation – This is a gift given in recognition of a king. In this case, the gift was praise for their mighty God-king, Yahweh. “Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to the Lord, and spoke, saying: “I will sing to the Lord, For He has triumphed gloriously! The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea! (Vs. 1)”
Adoration – This involves an obvious affection and connection with God that goes beyond admiration to the point of love. “The Lord is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation; He is my God, and I will praise Him; My father’s God, and I will exalt Him. (Vs. 2)”
Appreciation – This response recognizes what God has done for His people. “11 “Who is like You, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like You, glorious in holiness, Fearful in praises, doing wonders? 12 You stretched out Your right hand; The earth swallowed them. 13 You in Your mercy have led forth The people whom You have redeemed; You have guided them in Your strength To Your holy habitation. (Vss. 11-13)”
Expectation – The blessings of God led His people to believe for additional blessings and victories at the hand of the Lord. “16 Fear and dread will fall on them; By the greatness of Your arm They will be as still as a stone, Till Your people pass over, O Lord, Till the people pass over Whom You have purchased. (Vs. 16)”
Celebration – Sometimes we just need to give God an ovation, a celebration of praise, an emotional barrage of exultation over His goodness and His victory! “20 Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took the timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances. (Vs. 20)”
The next time God wins a victory in your life, give Him all the praise He deserves!
