The Need for Landmarks

Proverbs 22:28 (NKJV)
Do not remove the ancient landmark which your fathers have set.

Job 24:2–3 (NKJV)
2 “Some remove landmarks; They seize flocks violently and feed on them; 3 They drive away the donkey of the fatherless; They take the widow’s ox as a pledge.

Hosea 5:10 (NKJV)
10 “The princes of Judah are like those who remove a landmark; I will pour out my wrath on them like water.

Landmark #1
A Hunger for God
Acts 1:14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. [NKJ]

Psalms 42:1 As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God. [NKJ]

Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. [NKJ]

A Desire for Holiness
Acts 2:1 Now when the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. [NKJ]

Hebrews 12:14 Pursue peace with all men, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: [NKJ]

Landmark #3
A Burden for the Lost
Acts 2:40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.” 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. [NKJ]

JOHN 4:35 “Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! [NKJ]

Luke 10:2 Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. [NKJ]

Landmark #4
Centrality of the Word of God
Acts 2 and Peter’s sermon – He relied heavily on the Word of God. The early church rested heavily on the prophecy and instruction of the OT, their only Bible.

Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. [NKJ]

Landmark #5
The Work of the Holy Spirit
Gifts of the Spirit, Miracles, Signs and Wonders

Acts 2:1-13 “…And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance…” “…we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.”

1 Corinthians 14:1 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. [NKJ]

Landmark #6
Exuberant Praise
Acts 2:47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. [NKJ]

PSA 9:1 I will praise You, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will tell of all Your marvelous works. [NKJ]

PSA 28:7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart greatly rejoices, And with my song I will praise Him. [NKJ]

A People of Conviction
JOHN 16:7 “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 “And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: [NKJ]

Acts 2:42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. [NKJ]
