In these passages, we see God’s design for the year of Jubilee, which occurred every 50 years.  This year was to provide those who sold themselves for slavery or indentured service to be released at some point in life, in the year of jubilee.  Also, this provision makes sure that property stays in its family of origin as promised by Yahweh and Joshua, because property reverted backed to the ownership of its original family during the year of Jubilee.  All transactions concerning land were calculated as leases or rent based on the year since and until the Year of Jubilee.

The seventh year provisions included the command not to plant or harvest during that year, so they were to plant and harvest enough for three years in the sixth year, so make for enough food the the sixth, seventh, and part of the first year.

The idea of land ties in with the concept of inheritance and rest.  God promised a heritage to the Jews of land, just as He promises us as Christians a home eternal in Heaven.  It is important for us to never sell our inheritance, especially on a permanent basis, because it is a gift from God that we should not take for granted.

Provision of an inheritance is one of God’s promises, but also a promise of provision today is an assurance from our God.  When God calls you to obedience, even if it seems to obey will take one into a place of destitution, the faith-filled man or woman of God will take that step of faith and trust God to provide as we obey His will.  Trust in the Lord and He will provide food for your mouth and clothing for your back.  He never fails!
