We see a small caveat here in numbers that refers to the sons of Aaron. Aaron had four sons born into his house, who would serve as priests in the tabernacle: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. Nadab and Abihu had offered profane fire in the censers of worship to God at Sinai, and had died before the Lord. Only Eleazar and Ithamar remained to serve as priests with Aaron.
The lesson of which were are reminded here is the need to remain consecrated before God at all times, and the need to learn from the mistakes of others and not repeat those mistakes. In today’s world, there are far too many ministers being found out in sin and defrocked or at the very least humiliated or devalued. While it is true that we are all human and subject to frailty and sin, it is especially important that ministers live up to a higher standard of living, so that those who follow them have a godly example, faith in ministers, and–by extension–faith in God. It is devastating to many when a minister fails. It is painful to all believers. Men of God, guard your hearts and minds. Shun the very appearance of evil. Flee immorality! The church and the world need you.
But, when men fail, other men must step up and continue to serve, and help the body of Christ heal in times of failure. Let’s bind up the brokenhearted and help the body move forward, even when it is injured and hurt.
