The Gershonites were assigned the duty of removing, carrying, and installing the coverings of the tabernacle. This included the curtains of the tabernacle, the badger skins, the screen of the door, the gates, and the hangins of the court.
While the covering of the house of God in prayer is a good analogy of this duty of the Gershonites, there is another application as well. The presence of God is an awesome thing. As a matter of fact, as we note in the Old Testament, the presence of God was too awesome for any human to handle. Moses saw only the back side of God, and his face glowed for days! We need to be certain that, as ministers and as Christians, that we cover the presence of God in our midst with our respect, reverence, and awe. Too often, people make jokes or imitate the move of the Holy Spirit, or pretend to be worshiping in mockery of someone’s style. Some even imitate the operation of the gifts of the Spirit. While there are many ways that one can disrespect the presence of God, it is essential that Christians, especially ministers, protect and cover God’s presence in order to properly worship and honor Him. Let us do like the Gershonites and cover God’s presence with reverent worship!
