The final prophecy of Balaam has two prongs: a current and a future. This message speaks to Israel’s dominance of the promised land and its place as God’s chosen people in the Old Testament. However, it also can point forward to the coming of the Messiah, who will rule the entire earth. Jacob or Israel is the conduit whereby the Messiah comes, and was the nation through whom His kingdom was to be established. Balaam departed and Balak went his way as well. Their relationship was ended, and not to Balak’s liking.
The people of Israel were in Acacia Grove, and some men began to commit harlotry with the women of Moab. They began to worship the gods of Moab, and joined with Baal. God’s anger was aroused against Israel, and God told Moses to hang the offenders. When an Israelite man presented his Midianite wife before the people, in the midst of the plague of God against their idolatry, Phinehas took a javelin and speared them both through in his tent. When they were dead, the plague stopped. 24,000 people died in the process of the plague. God rewarded Phinehas for his zeal for God. God further instructed Moses to attack and harass the Midianites for their seduction of Israel.
God has His hand upon His people, but just because you are part of His people does not mean that you are immune from judgement. Sin requires a price. Sin costs more than one can know. Make certain that you obey the voice of God and not follow after your own lusts. God blesses those who keep His commandments!
