In the previous chapter, God gave Moses the following instructions:
Numbers 33:51–53 (NKJV)
51 “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘When you have crossed the Jordan into the land of Canaan, 52 then you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, destroy all their engraved stones, destroy all their molded images, and demolish all their high places; 53 you shall dispossess the inhabitants of the land and dwell in it, for I have given you the land to possess.
This instruction was to drive out all the inhabitants of Canaan and to destroy all their idols. This was God’s admonition so that the promised place could be completely dedicated to and in worship of the Lord Himself. This is how God wants us to possess the heritage of the Lord. Drive out all the demons, devils, and false gods, and then possess the land in order to glorify God.
In chapter 34, the border of Israel is established, and the inheritance of the 9 1/2 tribes to live on the west side of the Jordan. Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh were already given property on the East side of the Jordan. Leaders of the tribes were to assist in the task of dividing the land.
The land was to be divided based on the size of the tribes, more land to larger tribes and less to smaller tribes. In the same way, the heavenly rewards will be based upon our works. No doubt, salvation is a free gift, and is given freely by the grace of God. However, Scripture in Revelation clearly states that rewards in Heaven will be based on works. The nation of Israel is a type and shadow of the heavenly kingdom and shows us the picture of many things, the heritage of the saints being one of them.
