Moses recounts the story of Israel’s coming to the border of the Promised Land and then spying on the land to see its condition.  After spying, ten of the twelve spies gave a negative report, that Israel could not take the land.  There were too many giants, and they would be consumed by the land.  After this negative report, only Joshua and Caleb believed they could take the land.  After Moses shared the Lord’s displeasure, they decided to try to invade, but God did not go with them, and they were defeated.  The rest of the story is well-known, as they all were doomed to death and 40 years of wandering in the wilderness.

Moses reminded them of their lack of faith, not just to scold them (as this group was not among those who lacked faith), but to warn them of the sins of their fathers.  We must remember the sins of out fathers, so that we do not repeat them.  Whether it is the sin of your father, or your own past sin, be determined not to repeat the mistakes of the past.  Wisdom is learning and doing better next time.
