Moses reminds the Israelites that God demands obedience to His laws. He reminds them of the judgement at Baal Peor. He equates the laws and commandments of God with wisdom and understanding. He says that they were a blessed and respected nation because of their closeness to God. He also reminds them of the experience at Sinai, where they heard the voice of God at the foot of the mountain. His admonition is a warning and instruction. They had to remember the commandments of God in order to inherit the promised land and to be successful in it.
The ten commandments are the starting point for the laws of God. When God gave them the Decalogue, He intended for them to obey His laws from that moment forward. With obedience, there came blessing. With obedience came possession. With obedience came heritage. When we obey, we can count on God to direct our steps into the place of God’s favor. Obey and live!
