God warns Israel to not forget the Lord when they come into the blessed place. What a great admonition! God is letting the children of Israel know that He gladly blesses them, but they should not forget the source of those blessings. They should remember the deliverance from Egypt, and the commandments of God unto Israel.
He goes on to remind them that they are a chosen people, and that the nations who inhabit Canaan are to be driven out completely. They are told not to make covenant with them or make marriages with them. Instead, they should destroy the altars, pillars, wooden images, and carved images with fire. They should not accept or ally with any of the peoples of Canaan. They are a chosen people, a holy people unto God. They were not chosen because they were the largest, but just because God chose them to love them. God is the God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments. If you hate God or disobey, God will repay them.
When you are one of God’s chosen, you must keep His commandments, and separate yourself from the sinful ways and practices of the nations. God’s people must be different, separate, holy, and sanctified. Keep yourself unspotted by the ways of the world and God will keep covenant with you for a lifetime and beyond!
