The poor were to be provided for by their brethren through lending. A special instruction is given that says a Jew cannot deny a loan to a poor brother just because it is near the seven year forgiveness time. Lend even if you will lose on the deal!
Also, if a Hebrew were to serve another Hebrew as a slave, he or she must be released in the seventh year. When he is released, he is to be sent away with his hands full of blessings. If he wants to stay with his or her master, then he must go to the gatepost and take an awl through his ear to show that he is committed to serve his master for the rest of his life.
The over-arching principle here is that we should be generous to our brothers and sisters in Christ, as they are family. Lend without concern about your return, and give generously, especially to those who serve well. If you are good to others, you will be blessed yourself!
