As provision for the Levites (who had no inheritance), the Israelites would bring bulls and sheep to sacrifice, and they would receive the shoulders, cheeks, and stomachs. They were also to receive the firstfruits of their grain, new wine and oil, and fleece from sheep. This was to be given because of the calling of God upon their lives.
The priesthood is a calling from God. Because of the exhaustive nature of this calling, it is as if the lives of the Levites are not their own. Therefore, the people of God support them by providing for their livelihood. The system God put in place for Israel still works today.
The Israelites were not to do certain customs, such as passing a child through the fire to Molech, witchcraft, interpreting omens, sorcery, conjuring spells, calling up the dead, etc. All of these are considered an abomination to the Lord. The nations were driven out of the land because of these abominations.
This is a poignant reminder of the fact that God will not share one’s loyalty. God look for us to put all other gods away and worship Him only. Give up the idols, the witchcraft, the cultic behavior and serve God only!
