Various laws are discussed here.

  • A slave must not be given back to his master.
  • There shall not be ritual harlots in Israel.
  • Do not charge interest to your brother.
  • Pay all your vows quickly.
  • You can eat grapes from your neighbor’s vineyard, but not carry any away in a container.  The same is true of grain in your neighbor’s field.
  • When a man divorces his wife and she marries another, he must never take her back as a wife.

These laws are not related, but they do show some of God’s thoughts on many things.  Slavery was not right in God’s eyes.  Harlotry of any sort was a sexual sin.  Oppression is against God’s law.  Making a promise to God is a serious commitment.  Do not take advantage of your neighbor’s fruit.  These all reflect God’s respect for the dignity of humanity and how we relate to each other.  Treat each other with dignity and respect, and do not oppress!
