The children of Israel, once they came into the promised land, were instructed by God to bring some of the first of their produce to the temple and give God glory for bringing them into the promised land. The priests would but the basket of produce before the altar, and then the person offering the firstfruits would rehearse the history of God’s people going into Egypt, eventually being delivered from their bondage, and then being brought into the promised land.
They were additionally instructed to bring an extra tithe every third year to be given to the Levite, stanger, fatherless, and widow. Then they would rejoice over the blessings of God and the land given to them which flows with milk and honey.
This is one more example of the nation of Israel being instructed to recognize the provision of God in a tangible way. They had the normal tithe, but this was an additional way to share the bounty with others and to recap the blessings of God. We should borrow a page from this book and tangibly worship God for all His goodness.
