Half the tribes of Israel were to stand on Mount Gerazim to bless the people, and half were to stand on Mount Ebal to curse.  The curses were to be spoken on those who made a carved or molded image and set it up in secret.  Then the people responded, “Amen!”  Additional curses involved things such as the following: mistreating one’s parents, moving a neighbor’s landmark, abusing the blind, perverting judgement related to strangers, fatherless, and widows, committing adultery with your father’s wife, bestiality, incest, secretly attacking one’s neighbor, contract hits, living in contradiction to the law, etc.

Blessings were to come from obedience.  Blessings in the city, and in the country, the fruit of one’s body, ground, and flocks, food provision, in war, in storehouse supply, etc., will be brought on by obedience.  The Lord will establish the Israelites as a holy people, called by the name of the Lord, in the land the Lord swore to give them.  God would open His treasure to them, provide rain, and bless the work of their hands.  The Israelites would lend to other nations, they will be the head and not the tail, if they were to heed the commandments of the Lord.

Today, the Lord’s blessings and curses of this world may not be directly connected to the judgement of God, but at the same time, we see out lives either blessed or cursed due to our own actions.  When one lives in sin and risky behavior, then the consequences of those actions will be seen in one’s life.  When one obeys God, then His blessings will follow that behavior birthed out of Godly living.  Live right, and blessings will be meted out.
