The very blessings promised for obedience in the previous section are turned around into curses for those who disobey. In addition, there will be curses, confusion, and rebuke, along with destruction and perishing. Madness, blindness, tumors, and confusion follow those who disobey. Your wife will be taken by another man, and you cattle will be slaughtered. Their enemies would be victorious, and they will eat their own children. The survivors will be dispersed among the nations, and serve the nations as slaves.
After this stiff admonition relating to disobedience, Moses rehearses and renews the covenant between God and Israel. The history of Israel’s exodus from Israel and their wilderness trek is recounted. He reminds them of how God delivered them in battle. Then He calls them all together and re-establishes covenant with them, declaring that those who break covenant with God will be cut off and that the land who breaks covenant with God will be burned with fire and brimstone.
God is serious about obedience and the consequences of disobedience. Even today, we should strive to obey the laws and commandments of God every day. With obedience comes blessing. With disobedience comes lack.
