The final blessing of Moses includes the following thoughts:

  • The law was given by God to Israel as a blessing,
  • Each tribe received a special blessing,
  • Israel will live in safety, in a land of grain and new wine,
  • Their enemies will submit to them and they shall be saved by the Lord!

As the Scripture moves into chapter 34, Moses goes up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo on top of Pisgah.  The Lord showed him all the land destined for the tribes of Israel.  God reminds Moses of the promise of God to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to give the land to their descendants.  Moses then died on Nebo in the land of Moab.  No one knows where his grave is.  He was 120 years old when he died.  His eyesight and his vigor were not diminished.  And all of Israel wept for him for 30 days.

At this time, Joshua assumed the leadership of Israel.  All the people followed him, because Moses had laid his hands on him.  But no prophet has ever arisen in Israel like Moses since.

When a transition occurs, it is important to see that take place in an orderly fashion, with a transfer of leadership, anointing, and celebration.  New leadership can be exciting and powerful in the life of a church.  Without celebration and recognition, transition can be forced and uncomfortable.  Celebrate the past, live in the present, and embrace the future.  It is coming whether we want it to come or not.  Prepare for it, and you will not be caught off guard.
