The people of God moved into Canaan.  When they were near Jericho, Joshua looked up and saw a Man opposite him with His sword drawn.  Joshua questioned Him as to His allegiance, and the Man replied, “…as Commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.”  Joshua fell on His face and awaited instructions.  The Commander told Joshua to take his sandal off his foot, because the place where he stood was holy.  Joshua obeyed.

There is a tremendous parallel here between Moses burning bush experience and Joshua’s encounter with this unnamed Commander.  They both elicited a response that signified that they were in the presence of deity.  Therefore, it is reasonable to say that this Commander could have been a preincarnate appearance of Jesus Christ at the most, or a powerful angel at the least.  Either way, God chose to speak to Joshua directly in order to accomplish a purpose.  Was that purpose simply confirmation of Joshua’s leadership?  Could it have been a faith-building encounter to steel his resolve in advance of the Jericho conquest?  Could it have simply been one in a long list of God’s Spirit speaking to mankind for direction and encouragement?  Whatever the case may be. it is important for us to look for, anticipate, even expect that God wants to speak to us.  When we listen for the voice of God, He will speak.  Then we can reap all the benefits that Moses and Joshua received as a result of a direct encounter with God.  O come, o come, Emmanuel (God with us)!
