God instructed Joshua to take the entire army of Israel to fight against Ai. When the won the battle, they should do to it as they did Jericho, but they could take its spoil and cattle as booty. They were to lay an ambush behind the city, and fake a retreat in front of the city to draw the inhabitants out. Those behind the city would then rise up and take the city, and all the army would destroy the people of Ai and burn the city. They obeyed the command of God and took the city, killing twelve thousand people. After the victory over Ai, Joshua led the people to offer burnt offerings and they read all the law and commandments publicly, renewing the covenant between God and Israel.
When the people listened to God’s commandments, they were blessed and had victory. The same holds true today. Listen to God’s voice, through His word and the Holy Spirit, and God will lead you into blessings beyond your imagination. Renew the covenant often and remember what thus says the Lord and do it. Remembering the instructions reduces mistakes and wins the favor of the Lord.
