Caleb here stakes his claim to the land and the promise of God through Moses made 45 years earlier. After forty years wandering in the wilderness, a preparation time, and the battle for the land, Caleb is ready to take what was promised to him. He proclaims that he is just as strong as he was at age 40, although he is now 85. His rally cry, “Give me this mountain…,” is famous for its boldness and audacity, even as an old man. So Joshua allotted Hebron to Caleb for his inheritance.
This passage goes on to describe the boundaries of the inheritance of Judah. While the geography of the tribal inheritance is interesting, it is more interesting to see a man in Caleb whose promised inheritance was delayed for half a lifetime, yet he did not give up on the promise of God. He believed in spite of the time frame required for fulfillment. For what are you believing God? How long ago did God promise you something that you know He intends to give? Never give up on God. Never fall short of believing that God is faithful, for He is!
