Joseph’s two sons each took a share of the inheritance of Canaan.  The two “half-tribes” basically took the share of Joseph and the share of Levi, who did not have an inheritance.  It was only after Joseph was reunited with his family and the children of Israel left Israel that the two half-tribes were each considered a tribe on their own.  Perhaps Joseph’s vaunted place in the salvation of Israel during the famine warranted his descendants a special inheritance.  Maybe his role as the favored son of Jacob brought it about.  Either way, Joseph’s tribe was especially favored in the inheritance.  Joseph was a willing vessel of God, eternally optimistic and undaunted by adversity.  That attitude alone would warrant special blessing, for Joseph, but also for us.  Be positive and carry on without fail!
