At the tabernacle of meeting, in the one-time capital of Israel’s new territory, the city of Shiloh, the land was divided by lot. Each tribe received land according to its size, except the Levites, whose inheritance was the tabernacle and the work of the ministry. Finally, Joshua received an inheritance in the city of Timnath Serah in the mountains of Ephraim.
The Lord reminded them of the need to designate cities of refuge, so that the unintentional manslayer could flee and find refuge from the avenger of the dead. They appointed Kedesh, Shechem, Kirjath Arba, Bezer, Ramoth, Golan.
Joshua showed true leadership character here, as he made sure all tribes had been given an appropriate inheritance before he received his own inheritance. The needs of the body before the needs of the leader is a great character trait. The cities of refuge were instituted according to the commandment of the Lord. The moral is that Christians should follow through, especially those things that are commanded by God!
