Samuel called Saul aside before he left for home and anointed his head with a flask of oil, and then gave him instructions and prophecy as to what would happen to him on the way home. At Rachel’s tomb in Benjamin he would find two men who would tell him that the donkeys were found, and now his father was worried about him.  Then, at the terebinth tree at Tabor, three men would come to him with goats, bread, and a skin of wine.  Then, at the hill of God, where the Philistine garrison was, that he would meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place.  Then the spirit would come upon him as well, and he would prophecy and be turned into another man.  Then he should go down to Gilgal and wait seven days for Samuel.  These things happened as Samuel said they would.  He prophesied among the prophets and went to Gilgal to wait.

The Samuel called the people together to the Lord at Mizpah.  He then prophesied that the people of Israel had rejected God as their king, and asked for a king of men.  Then he called them all together to present themselves before the Lord by tribes and clans.  As they appeared, Samuel chose Benjamin, then the family of Matri, the Saul the son of Kish was chosen.  They then asked where he was, but he was not their yet.  But he was only hidden among the equipment.  When he stood among the people, he was taller than anyone and the people cried, “Long live the King!”  Then Saul explained the behavior of kings, entered it into the book, and laid it before the Lord.  Saul went home, and some men followed him, but a few rebels despised him, and brought him no presents.

Although God showed His favor and fulfilled the prophetic words of Samuel, there was still a sign of Saul’s fitness for service.  He hid from those who would anoint him king, and was reluctant due to family’s status.  This would not bode well for Saul’s kingship.  Therefore, we should choose our leaders carefully, and allow the Holy Spirit to lead our choices, and to not judge according to looks or height when choosing a leader.  Instead, look on the heart, and choose a warrior!
