Song of Solomon 7:1–6 (NKJV)

7:1 How beautiful are your feet in sandals,
O prince’s daughter!
The curves of your thighs are like jewels,
The work of the hands of a skillful workman.
2 Your navel is a rounded goblet;
It lacks no blended beverage.
Your waist is a heap of wheat
Set about with lilies.
3 Your two breasts are like two fawns,
Twins of a gazelle.
4 Your neck is like an ivory tower,
Your eyes like the pools in Heshbon
By the gate of Bath Rabbim.
Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon
Which looks toward Damascus.
5 Your head crowns you like Mount Carmel,
And the hair of your head is like purple;
A king is held captive by your tresses.

6 How fair and how pleasant you are,
O love, with your delights!

This passage describes the Beloved’s complete infatuation with his new bride on their honeymoon.  He describes in intimate details her appearance, starting with her feet and moving up to her thighs, her navel, her waist, and then describes the beauty of her breasts, neck, eyes, nose and head.  He completes the picture by describing her beautiful dark hair and how a king is held captive (himself) by her tresses.  He is obviously smitten with her beauty and charm, and is overwhelmed by the intimate nature of their first nights together.  This beautiful image of love’s first intimate encounter is a powerful picture of the culmination of courting, committing, and cherishing one another on the path to marriage.

While some of this may make the casual reader uncomfortable, it is part of God’s plan for our lives and our fulfillment.  When a man and a woman fall in love according to God’s will, He provides them a beautiful way to consummate their love in a physical way.  It is a way to join together physically that mirrors the spiritual union that takes place before and during the wedding.  This is a good thing that God created.  This is a beautiful thing that married couples have experienced, that first moment when love is fulfilled physically.  Don’t fear the discussion, but celebrate love.  Don’t be crass or dirty, but don’t ignore the blessing of sex within the bounds of love that God designed.  A man and a woman in love, committed for a lifetime, get to enjoy one another in a holy fashion unavailable to fornicators and adulterers.  Love your spouse in every way.  Enjoy your spouse and thank God for the joy of love!
