17 All this has come upon us;
But we have not forgotten You,
Nor have we dealt falsely with Your covenant.
18 Our heart has not turned back,
Nor have our steps departed from Your way;
19 But You have severely broken us in the place of jackals,
And covered us with the shadow of death.

  • In the midst of my shame and disappointment, I have never forgotten Your goodness and blessing.
  • We stand firmly upon the promises of Your covenant.
  • We still stand steadfast in relation with You.
  • We will walk with You all the way in this life.
  • Even though You have spoiled us and set us in the middle of predators and scavengers, and threatened death to us, we will stand firm in our commitment to You.
  • We will pursue hard to find You and Your presence again in our lives.

20 If we had forgotten the name of our God,
Or stretched out our hands to a foreign god,
21 Would not God search this out?
For He knows the secrets of the heart.
22 Yet for Your sake we are killed all day long;
We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

  • If we forgot Who our God is or followed after a false god, the true God would know it.
  • We cannot escape Your knowledge. We cannot hide our secrets from You.
  • We are killed by our enemies, and slaughtered like sheep for Your sake.
  • We are victimized for our faithfulness to You.

23 Awake! Why do You sleep, O Lord?
Arise! Do not cast us off forever.
24 Why do You hide Your face,
And forget our affliction and our oppression?
25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust;
Our body clings to the ground.
26 Arise for our help,
And redeem us for Your mercies’ sake.

  • Lord, wake up and hear our cries!
  • Please do not leave us out in this field of danger.
  • Open Your eyes and see us in our affliction.
  • Stop the hands of our oppressors.
  • We are almost bowed down with our faces in the dust.
  • We wallow on the ground.
  • Please get up and save us!
  • Redeem us, because Your mercy never fails.
