One Year Journey Through the New Testament

1 Timothy 2

Welcome to our journey through the New Testament!

Pray for All Men

1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time, for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle—I am speaking the truth in Christ and not lying—a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

(1 Timothy 2:1–7, NKJV)

Points to Ponder:

  • To begin this second chapter, Paul instructs Timothy to tell all Christians under his care to provide prayers for all men, for kings and authorities, and for a peaceable life as a godly individual.
  • Paul then spoke of the one God and Mediator between God and men, which is Jesus Christ. He gave His life to save us, a ransom for our sins.
  • We are preachers and witnesses of the gospel message of Jesus Christ. Paul saw himself as just that, plus an apostle to establish the gospel in many places, including among the Gentiles.

Men and Women in the Church

I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. 11 Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. 12 And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. 15 Nevertheless she will be saved in childbearing if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.

(1 Timothy 2:8–15, NKJV)

Points to Ponder:

  • Paul then offered instructions for Timothy to teach about the roles of men and women in the church.
  • Paul called all men to prayer and worship in faith. That was his primary instruction to Timothy for men.
  • However, he was more verbose with the women in the church.
  • Paul said that women should dress modestly, avoiding flashy or ostentatious displays of wealth.
  • He further tells them to learn in silence with submission. He stated that he did not permit a woman to teach or have authority over a man, but to learn in silence.
  • Paul used the example of Adam being created first, and then Eve. He stated that man was not deceived, but Eve. Women, though, would be saved in childbearing (the curse of Eve) if they live in faith, love, and holiness.
  • While there is an order in the kingdom of God, as outlined already in Ephesians, this was probably also informed by the instructions in 1 Corinthians where he told women to be silent in the church. This is likely the same type of instruction, which addressed confusion caused by women speaking out loud, asking questions of their husbands from their separate seating in the meetings.
  • The main lesson for us from this passage is the need for order in the church.
