Romans 12:1–2 (NKJV)
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
I. The Call (12:1a)
- Urgent (Beseech)
- In light of the work of Christ (therefore)
- Divine (Mercies of God)
- Response (Present Yourselves) – A sacrifice in every day life. Not just at an altar, but at school, work, home, play, rest. Living out the sacrifice, the setting apart to God.
II. The Need (12:1b)
- Holiness (Holy)
- Godliness (Acceptable)
- Service (Reasonable Service or Act of Worship)
III. The Process (12:2a)
- Conformity (Be not conformed) – Do not conform to this world or this age (social groups, cultural norms, institutions, traditions) as it tries to mold your behavior.
- Transformation (Be transformed) – Be transformed by an inner change that will reflect the God that you now serve. What is God saying? What is God doing?
- The Mind (by the renewing of your mind) – Get your mind right! What will the Spirit guide you to do?
IV. The Benefits (12:2b)
- Goodness (good)
- Godliness (acceptable)
- Knowledge of Complete/Right (perfect) will of God
