A fairly short admonition against idolatry is included here as a reminder and reinforcer. When God cuts off the nations and drives them out before you, do not be ensnared by their idolatrous gods. Do not even entertain your own curiosity about them, for they can draw you in. God hated the abominations of idolatry, specifically naming one–offering ones children unto false gods in the fire.
While we do not see many temples to false gods today, we should be very careful to not dabble in, be curious about, or possess items that are associated with false religions or idols. Buddhism has images, the Hindus have hundreds of false gods, and even the secular world has placed the famous, athletic, and talented on an elevated pedestal that makes them nearly idolatrous themselves. In other words, do not allow anything to draw you away from a hot, deep, powerfully rich relationship with God. Satan will use any opportunity to draw you away from your closeness with God. Just remember: sinful men and women can distract you from God’s truth and His way. Also, false religions do not serve a god, but rather a form or figure of something they believe to be god. There is only one true God, and He is the only true object of worship to be served!
