“Moses my servant is dead.”  What a stark introduction to Joshua from the Lord!  Lord, we know he is dead.  Did you have to remind us?  Then, immediately following that thought, God tells him to go into the Promised Land.  “Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses.”  He gives them the parameters of their new territory, and promises to never leave them as they conquer and live.  He admonishes them to be strong and courageous, and do the law of God.  The Book of the Law was to hold a prominent place in the life of Israel and each individual.

Joshua then ordered the officers of the people to prepare provisions, and ready the people to cross the Jordan.  He instructed them on how each tribe would contribute men to the war effort, and then there would be rest for all.  The people responded with their support and obedience, telling Joshua that they would follow him as they did Moses.  Anyone who did not obey the words of Joshua would be killed.

This instruction from God simply reiterated what God has already commanded the people, but with new leadership.  Joshua is inaugurated as the leader of Israel, and he gladly takes the mantle.  He carries out his first act, readying the people for an attack on Canaan after they cross the Jordan River.  The people see his leadership coming through, and they respect the office, so they pledge their allegiance to Joshua and are now prepared for battle.  When God provides godly leadership, it is imperative that Christians line up behind them and follow their leadership.  You may not always agree with everything that is done, but if a man or woman is following Christ in a Biblical way, then deal with the little things and follow that leader to do something great!
