In the midst of the oppression by the Midianites, an angel appeared to Gideon while he threshed wheat in the winepress. The angel called him a mighty man of valor. Gideon questioned the faithfulness of God because of the problems with Midian. The Lord told Gideon to go in the power God was giving him and defeat Midian. Gideon behaved like Moses did at his calling, proclaiming his unworthiness to serve. The Lord promised to be with him and bring about Midian’s defeat. Gideon asked for a sign, and brought an offering to the angel. When the angel touched the offering with his staff, it caught on fire and was consumed. Then the angel departed.
Gideon knew he had seen the angel of the Lord, and grieved. However, God told him he would not die, and made peace with him. The Lord then instructed Gideon to tear down the altar of Baal that his father had built. He did as God commanded, and the next day the men of the city saw what had been done. They wanted to punish Gideon, but Joash, his father, prevented them. He said, though, that Baal should be able to defend himself if he is really a god.
After this victory, the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon, and he called all the Manassites, Asherites, Zebulonites, and Naphtalites together.
When you answer the call of God, He will give you favor and victory!
