The Song of Deborah (Judges 5:1 – 6:10)

Deborah and Barak sang a song and rehearsed the account of Israel’s deliverance from Jabin.  They sang about the tribes of Israel and the work that was done, and then Jael was touted as the savior of the people.  After the song, there was the statement that the land had rest for forty years.

After the forty years, the children of Israel did evil again, and the Lord delivered Israel in the hand of Midian for seven years.  Because of Midian, the Israelites hid in dens and caves.  The Midianites destroyed all the crops sown by Israel.  Israel lost donkeys, sheep, and oxen.  Midianites came into the land to destroy it, and Israel was greatly impoverished.  When Israel cried out to the Lord, he sent a prophet to remind them of the promises of God to protect them.  However, they had not obeyed the voice of the Lord, so they were living outside His protection.  This is just one more example of Israel’s disobedience in spite of God’s instruction.  Listen to God and be blessed!
