A prophet came to his neighbor and prophecied to him to strike him. The man refused, and the prophet told him that because he refused and Lion would kill him. And it happened just like he said. He found another man and went through the same process. the man struck him, inflicting a wound. He bound up his head and waited for the king to come by. When he did, he cried out to him, relating a story.
1 Kings 20:39–40 (NKJV)
“Your servant went out into the midst of the battle; and there, a man came over and brought a man to me, and said, ‘Guard this man; if by any means he is missing, your life shall be for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.’ While your servant was busy here and there, he was gone.” Then the king of Israel said to him, “So shall your judgment be; you yourself have decided it.”
Then the prophet took the bandage away, and the king recognized him as one of the prophets. The prophet said that because he had let the king of Syria slip away, a man determined for destruction, that Ahab would die in his place. Ahab went home displeased.
Ahab’s disobedience of God’s initial command to drive out all the enemies of Israel is now resulting in a punishment that would eventually cost him his life. Obedience is the only sure way to be blessed and secure.
