The first part of this psalm focuses on the faithlessness of man.
Psalm 12:1–2 (NKJV)
1 Help, LORD, for the godly man ceases!
For the faithful disappear from among the sons of men.
2 They speak idly everyone with his neighbor;
With flattering lips and a double heart they speak.
David feels the frustration of seeing people fade away from their commitment to the Lord. He knows the need for a dedicated life in faith, and lifts up man’s failures. He continues by calling on the Lord to cut off the lips and tongues–the words–of those who flatter and speak proudly.
The Lord then responds that He will arise for the oppressed, the needy, and set them in safety. The words of the Lord, as opposed to those of the ungodly, are pure, tried like silver, preserved forever. The wicked, however, prowl when vileness is exalted among men.
David saw much in his life, especially during his forty year reign as king. His life was at risk at times. His own family rebelled against him. His very inner circle turned on him. However, he knew that the Lord would always be faithful and trustworthy, throughout his life. He will be true to you, as well. When evil reigns, good men must look to the Lord for help!
