Keep Me Focused (Psalm 119:33 – 40)

33 Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statutes,

And I shall keep it to the end.

34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law;

Indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart.

35 Make me walk in the path of Your commandments,

For I delight in it.

36 Incline my heart to Your testimonies,

And not to covetousness.

37 Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things,

And revive me in Your way.

38 Establish Your word to Your servant,

Who is devoted to fearing You.

39 Turn away my reproach which I dread,

For Your judgments are good.

40 Behold, I long for Your precepts;

Revive me in Your righteousness.

The psalmist here prays for the Lord to teach him and give him understanding of the statutes and law of God.  He longs for God, and pledges his whole heart to the pursuit of God’s truth.  He asks God to keep him from distractions and turn his eyes from worthless things.  He asks God to establish His word in his life.

While this is a continuing theme in Psalm 119, this psalm truly speaks of holy living.  The psalmist asks God, through His Word, to keep Him from sin and wrong, and pledges to follow hard after God.  With the distractions that life offers, focus is essential in order to keep one’s heart pure.  Declare that today is a day of dedication unto the Lord.  Call on God for holiness and righteousness.  Then, do the work of studying His Word and living it daily.  God will be glorified and you will be more like Him!
