For His Mercy Endures Forever (Psalm 136)

The psalmist writes a song here with the recurring phrase, “For His mercy endures forever.”  This ode to God’s greatness is punctuated by this phrase that accentuates His mercy.  The list of His wonderful attributes includes His goodness, His deity, His rule, His wonders.  He also extols God’s wisdom, His creative work, His ability to overcome world leaders and deliver His people.  God slew famous kings and gave their land to His people as an inheritance.  He sums up the psalm with the following words:

Psalm 136:23–26 (NKJV)

23 Who remembered us in our lowly state,
For His mercy endures forever;
24 And rescued us from our enemies,
For His mercy endures forever;
25 Who gives food to all flesh,
For His mercy endures forever.

26 Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven!
For His mercy endures forever.

For believers today, it is comforting to think of the great mercy of God toward us.  In the Old Testament, mercy was connected to the sacrificial system.  Mercy came through the offering of an animal sacrifice.  However, in the New Testament era in which we live is beyond the realm of the sacrificial system.  The mercy of God is available to all without animal sacrifice.  Therefore, if the Hebrew system of sacrifice celebrated mercy to this degree, how much more should we celebrate the great mercy of God extended to us through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ!  He is the source of mercy.  He is still the Creator, Provider, Ruler, God over all, and He is our Lord and Savior…and His mercy endures forever!
