On the Wrong Side of God’s Plan

Micah 2:1–5 (NKJV)

2:1 Woe to those who devise iniquity,

And work out evil on their beds!

At morning light they practice it,

Because it is in the power of their hand.

2 They covet fields and take them by violence,

Also houses, and seize them.

So they oppress a man and his house,

A man and his inheritance.

3 Therefore thus says the Lord:

“Behold, against this family I am devising disaster,

From which you cannot remove your necks;

Nor shall you walk haughtily,

For this is an evil time.

In this opening assessment of the condition of the land, God identifies evildoers, specifically men who oppress others and devise schemes to take land from those who may be less powerful.  The Lord intends to not only judge these people as evil, but also plans to devise evil against them, putting them in a yoke of bondage and humbling them in this evil time.

4 In that day one shall take up a proverb against you,

And lament with a bitter lamentation, saying:

‘We are utterly destroyed!

He has changed the heritage of my people;

How He has removed it from me!

To a turncoat He has divided our fields.’ ”

5 Therefore you will have no one to determine boundaries by lot

In the assembly of the Lord.

The Lord then goes further to speak of the lamentation of the family (group of evildoers) who oppressed their brothers in Israel and Judah.  They will then lose their inheritance of land, and it will be given to foreigners and defectors from Israel.  The land divided to the Israelites by lot will be given to others.  The message here is one of judgment.  When a more powerful person takes advantage of a less powerful person, God takes note.  He is a friend to the weak and defenseless, and stands for them in disputes.  Be sure that you do not oppress others because of your skills of persuasion or your brute force.  Instead, be an advocate for the weak.  If you are weak, know that God will see your plight and work on your behalf.  Simply trust Him and believe.  Don’t get on the wrong side of God’s nature.  Walk with Him, not against Him.  Be on the right side of God’s plan!
