The Mountain of the Lord

Micah 4:1–5 (NKJV)

4:1 Now it shall come to pass in the latter days

That the mountain of the Lord’s house

Shall be established on the top of the mountains,

And shall be exalted above the hills;

And peoples shall flow to it.

2 Many nations shall come and say,

“Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,

To the house of the God of Jacob;

He will teach us His ways,

And we shall walk in His paths.”

For out of Zion the law shall go forth,

And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

Micah here relates the prophetic word of the Lord concerning the restoration of Israel.  The “Mountain of the Lord” will be established above all others, and nations with come to the mountain to hear the word of the Lord in Jerusalem.  The city of God will be established and His presence will be obvious.

3 He shall judge between many peoples,

And rebuke strong nations afar off;

They shall beat their swords into plowshares,

And their spears into pruning hooks;

Nation shall not lift up sword against nation,

Neither shall they learn war anymore.

4 But everyone shall sit under his vine and under his fig tree,

And no one shall make them afraid;

For the mouth of the Lord of hosts has spoken.

5 For all people walk each in the name of his god,

But we will walk in the name of the Lord our God

Forever and ever.

The Lord will be established over all the earth, and He will judge the nations. War will end, as weapons will be converted to farming tools, and no military or conflict will exist any longer.  Peace will reign and all will be free from fear.

This passage has eschatological ramifications.  This speaks of a future time when the Lord will reign on the earth.  This could have applications for the restoration of Israel to come within the near future of Biblical times, and most likely does.  However, it also speaks of a time like the millennial reign of Christ on the earth for a thousand years.  Most prophecies have a present and a future application, so both could be true.  The real message here is hope for a future of restoration and peace.  Whatever your situation, know that God has a future in mind for you that will be blessed.  Whether happiness is within your grasp every day or not, peace is.  You can live in peace, knowing that God is working on your behalf.  “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, …He will teach us His ways….”
