The Day of Small Things

Zechariah 4:8–14 (NKJV)

4:8 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying:

9 “The hands of Zerubbabel

Have laid the foundation of this temple;

His hands shall also finish it.

Then you will know

That the Lord of hosts has sent Me to you.

smstart10 For who has despised the day of small things?

For these seven rejoice to see

The plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel.

They are the eyes of the Lord,

Which scan to and fro throughout the whole earth.”

The message to Zerubbabel continues here with the Lord going beyond Zerubbabel’s ability to complete the task by the power of the Lord’s Spirit and moving into a vision of God’s hand in the work, and the great nature of its fulfillment.  Zerubbabel has started the work and he will finish it.  Also, although the work is just being started, do not despise small beginnings.  Small beginnings turn into great endings when the Spirit works in them.  The seven eyes of the Lord, perhaps referring back to the stone with seven eyes, see the plumb line, the tools, in the hand of Zerubbabel, and they rejoice.

11 Then I answered and said to him, “What are these two olive trees—at the right of the lampstand and at its left?” 12 And I further answered and said to him, “What are these two olive branches that drip into the receptacles of the two gold pipes from which the golden oil drains?”

13 Then he answered me and said, “Do you not know what these are?”

And I said, “No, my lord.”

14 So he said, “These are the two anointed ones, who stand beside the Lord of the whole earth.”

The prophet asks what the meaning of the two olive trees signifies.  The angel then responds that the trees are the two anointed ones who stand beside the Lord.  Some scholars believe that this is referring to Zerubbabel and Joshua, the high priest.  However, their identity is unclear.  Either way, the idea of anointing is present in this description, as they are considered conduits through which the Holy Spirit will flow.

Whatever calling or purpose God has given you, let the Spirit flow through your life.  No matter how small your role may seem in the kingdom, no matter how little results you see right now, know that God’s Spirit flowing through you will achieve the extraordinary.  His power will take you higher and further than you ever imagined.  Don’t despise a small beginning, for the Spirit of God will enlarge your work and make it magnificent!
