Zechariah 13:1–6 (NKJV)

13:1 “In that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.

“It shall be in that day,” says the Lord of hosts, “that I will cut off the names of the idols from the land, and they shall no longer be remembered. I will also cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to depart from the land. It shall come to pass that if anyone still prophesies, then his father and mother who begot him will say to him, ‘You shall not live, because you have spoken lies in the name of the Lord.’ And his father and mother who begot him shall thrust him through when he prophesies.

The fountain that is spoken of in verse one is a fountain designed for cleansing of the nation and of eradicating the sinful practice of idolatry.  The reaction to the work of God to cleanse Jerusalem of false prophecy will be that those who continue to prophesy falsely will die, some even at the hands of their families.

“And it shall be in that day that every prophet will be ashamed of his vision when he prophesies; they will not wear a robe of coarse hair to deceive. But he will say, ‘I am no prophet, I am a farmer; for a man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.’ And one will say to him, ‘What are these wounds between your arms?’ Then he will answer, ‘Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.’

The backlash against false prophecy will be that the false prophets will hide their identities and will claim to just be farmers and cattle ranchers.  They will deny that they were stabbed or thrust through for their false prophesies.  They will stop being the idolatrous sinners that they once were.  God wants to cleanse His people of the sinful practices that plague them and hold them back.  He will punish sin and cleanse the land.

This passage reminds me of the song, “There is a Fountain Filled With Blood,” describing the powerful fountain of hte blood of Jesus.  The fountain is flowing that will wash away sin.  Get under that flow and be cleansed.  Do not wait until the spear comes to your house.  Repent and be cleansed!
