Malachi 2:6–9 (NKJV)

6 The law of truth was in his mouth,

And injustice was not found on his lips.

He walked with Me in peace and equity,

And turned many away from iniquity.

7 “For the lips of a priest should keep knowledge,

And people should seek the law from his mouth;

For he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts.

8 But you have departed from the way;

You have caused many to stumble at the law.

You have corrupted the covenant of Levi,”

Says the Lord of hosts.

9 “Therefore I also have made you contemptible and base

Before all the people,

Because you have not kept My ways

But have shown partiality in the law.”

This last piece of the second disputation of Malachi speaks directly to the priesthood in a personal indictment of their lax behavior relating to priestly duties and the worship of the people of God.  Levi, the original son of Jacob called to the priesthood, served God in truth and justice.  However, his offspring have failed God and corrupted the covenant.  Instead of keeping the knowledge of the truth and dispensing it to the people, the priest of Malachi’s day has caused many to stumble at the law.  The partiality of the priest in dealing with the people has made him contemptible and base before God and the people.  His misleading of the people has caused widespread idolatry and injustice that has weakened the fiber of Israel.  Therefore, God has brought judgment and shame upon the priesthood and lowered their vaunted status among the people.

As a minister, God expects the men and women of calling to live a lifestyle that is holy, and minister in a holy fashion.  God will not tolerate a hireling speaking to the people in His ministry.  God does not desire compromised worship, but pure worship, hearts submitted to Him in humble submission.  Men and women of God must always bring the people before the Lord in the Word, in prayer, and in praise and worship in a way that truly points all to Christ.  When everyone has access to the presence of the Lord without mixture or dilution, true transformation can occur in hearts and lives!
