John 14:1–14 (NKJV)
1 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And where I go you know, and the way you know.”John 14:1-4
Jesus opens this part of His last supper teaching with an admonition not to worry, because the future is much brighter than the events about to unfold in the next few days. Jesus reveals that He is ascending to heaven to prepare and eternal home for His followers, and will return to take us there. What a wonderful promise from the Savior!
5 Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”John 14:5-7
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
7 “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”
Thomas, who will later be identified as the doubter who rejected the notion of Jesus’ resurrection, questions Jesus about the whereabouts of this place, and how they can ever know how to get there. “How can we know the way?” Poor Thomas, uncertain and afraid, questions the very Messiah for which he has prayed, the One who worked miracles and taught with authority. Jesus simply reminds and re-establishes who He is by uttering the famous phrase, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” He puts the mind of His disciple at ease by showing him, one more time, that the way is not a map or even a portal. The way is Christ Himself. He and the Father are one; when you see Jesus, you have seen the Father. Therefore, He will take you where you need to be and it will be amazing!
8 Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.”John 14:8-14
9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. 11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.
12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.
Philip furthered questions Jesus, asking to be shown the Father. Jesus scolds Philip and then reminds them of the works He has shown them that prove He is of the Father, and then proceeds to promise that those who believes in Him will do the works that Christ has done, and will do even greater works, because He is going back to His Father. He then bestows supernatural authority upon them, promising that what they ask in His name will be given. In this moment, Jesus is ultimately preparing His disciples for what will come right away, and for the life and ministry they will have after He has ascended back to heaven. He promises several things:
- a home in heaven
- a Savior that will lead them to heaven, and
- the power of heaven.
God promises us the same today. He is preparing us a place that we may be with Him. He will show us the way for He is the Way. He will come again. While He is gone, we operate in His power, and can do mighty things, which we should. Don’t get a bunker mentality, trying to hide and just make it until He comes. Live in victory and do great things in His name until He comes. Although I am truly looking forward to the coming of the Lord, I hope to be so enthralled with the miracles and blessings of God while fulfilling His purpose on earth that it will be like a “thief in the night” and I will go into His eternal rest knowing that He worked in my life to effect His purposes. Walk in the Way and be powerfully effective for His kingdom!
