Luke 22:35–38 (NKJV)
35 And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?”
Luke 22:35-38
So they said, “Nothing.”
36 Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. 37 For I say to you that this which is written must still be accomplished in Me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.”
38 So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.”
And He said to them, “It is enough.”
Jesus further prepares His disciples, this time for His arrest and crucifixion, knowing that this may be a time of danger and trouble for them. He reminds them Who their ultimate source is, referencing the way for which they were provided while on a mission for Christ. However, now, He instructs them to be prepared with financial provision and even protection while during this interim period while Jesus will be in the tomb. While this seems like contradictory thinking, it is not. Jesus is the ultimate provider of our needs, but we must be diligent and prepared for situations that may arise as well. Jesus was able to feed five thousand with a few fish and five loaves, but this did not happen every day. Go in faith, especially when specifically instructed by God not to take provisions. However, be a bit of a scout as well, and be prepared so that you do not appear to be irresponsible when a need arises. Trust and obey, but prepare for the day!
