Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. (NLT)

Proverbs 4:23
  • The Human Kings of a Divine Kingdom
    • Saul stood head and shoulders above all men in Israel, but Saul took spoil after defeating the Amalekites against Samuel’s instruction and lost the crown. He then resorted to consulting a medium, and a spirit resembling Samuel scolded him further for his sinful behavior.
    • David the King slew Goliath and was known as a man after God’s own heart, but David later lusted after another man’s wife, Bathsheba, and took her as a lover. When she became pregnant, he had her husband, Uriah, killed and took her as his wife. The child of their sin died.
    • Solomon was the wisest man in all of Israel, but Solomon married many foreign wives, took many concubines, and worshipped their gods, prompting him to write woeful words of futility.
    • Ahab was anointed king, but Ahab’s lack of leadership led him to cower before his wife and do her bidding (Sinful, Controllling Jezebel)
  • What Does it Take to Be King?
    • Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.1
    • So, trust in God completely and be a steady rock for your family

This is a trustworthy saying: “If someone aspires to be a church leader, he desires an honorable position.” 2 So a church leader must be a man whose life is above reproach. He must be faithful to his wife. He must exercise self-control, live wisely, and have a good reputation. He must enjoy having guests in his home, and he must be able to teach. 3 He must not be a heavy drinker or be violent. He must be gentle, not quarrelsome, and not love money. 4 He must manage his own family well, having children who respect and obey him. 5 For if a man cannot manage his own household, how can he take care of God’s church?

An Imperfect Man’s Prayer on Fathers Day

I struggle with my flesh, I wrestle with my humanity. But Lord, help me to fetter my sinful nature and reject temptation that I may please you. Let my spirit thrive while my flesh dies. Help me to cherish the throne and my subjects. Let me wear the crown well and rule well and lead well and provide well.

1Shakespeare, from King Henry the Fourth
