The incense for the tabernacle would be made of sweet spices, stacte, onycha, galbanum, and pure frankincense. It would be compounded by the method of a perfumer, salted and beaten. It would not be used by anyone for any other purpose.
The tabernacle was to be built by the best artisans in all of Israel. Bezalel was filled with the Spirit of God and would skillfully design artistic works in gold, silver, bronze, jewels for the tabernacle. Aholiab was also gifted with wisdom and would be skilled in forming all the furniture of the tabernacle and the garments of ministry for the priests, and the anointing oil and sweet incense for the holy place. These men were called of God and separated for the service of the tabernacle and almighty God.
The incense is a type of the presence of God the Holy Spirit in the house of God. When we come together for worship, we should invoke the presence of the Holy Spirit through praise and worship of God. When the Spirit enters the house, an almost tangible presence, like the smoke of incense, fills the room. The artisans were the most skilled and anointed of all the men in Israel. When we offer ourselves unto God for service, we should come the most prepared and skilled that we possibly can. Do not offer God subpar ministry, but rather the best that we have to offer. God deserves our best!
