Something New

After 23 years at one church, Lisa and I are embarking on a new adventure in state work. We are excited, and we certainly feel that God has led us here. However, this is absolutely something new. Different tasks, different challenges, different metrics, different avenues to success. It is exhilarating in many ways.
The wisdom writer of Ecclesiastes said, “For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1 [NLT]).” Many of us traverse the space between one season and another, some with grace and some with pain. The things we leave behind are precious, and leaving produces grief. The things ahead salve that grief with hope and opportunity in the offing. But what about that space?
The space between something old and something new can become a cavernous, sticky space. Indecision can leave you without clear direction or purpose. Staying with the familiar is easier, we think. Moving into the unknown is frightening. However, it is also thrilling, and rife with opportunity. But a leap into that future made prematurely can lead to frustration and failure if not made in God’s timing.
What is a man or woman to do? Be certain to bathe such decisions in prayer and perhaps fasting. Be sure to hear the voice of God. Be sure that neither emotion nor pride are allowed to be the deciding factor. What is God’s will? What will glorify the Creator? The answer to that question is what should move you either into the new unknown or to settle you into the current known.
Don’t get stuck in the space of indecision. Make every day a new adventure, something new that God can bless for His glory!
