God With Us

22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

Matthew makes sure that all the readers know the meaning of this word. Hebrew masculine name which means “God with us.” It appears only twice in the OT (Is 7:14; 8:8) and once in the NT (Mt 1:23), where it is transliterated “Emmanuel.” In the OT the name was given to a child born in the time of Ahaz as a sign to the king that Judah would receive relief from attacks by Israel and Syria. The name symbolized the fact that God would demonstrate his presence with his people in this deliverance.

God Showed Up
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.

It is always easy to go against the plan of God.

Joseph could have divorced Mary and no one would have blamed him. A pregnant fiancee was cause to divorce or even judge a woman of adultery.

All of us have sinned

Romans 3:21–26 (NKJV)
21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, 26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

God Showed Up
20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

God spoke to Joseph through a messenger (angellos, angel) that the child to be born to Mary was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and He would save the people from their sins.

Regardless of what you have done wrong, regardless of the looks of your life, if you surrender to the plan of God, the will of God, you can be used by God to effect His purpose in your life. You do not have to wander through this life without direction and purpose. God has a better way and He is here!

22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

God showed up in the form of a baby born of a virgin.

God showed up and made His presence known, bringing light into a dark world.

God With Us
24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, 25 and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name Jesus.

After the angel spoke to Joseph in a dream, he rose up and followed the Lord’s instructions and facilitated the entrance of the Savior into the world.

Today, a messenger has been sent into this place to declare the gospel of Jesus Christ, and the message of Christmas. Jesus came into the world 2000 years ago, and He showed up today to save you, to deliver you, to set you free from sin.
